Why consider sizing your roles?

The only recognised method of accurately measuring the size of a role under UK law is through the use of an analytical form of job evaluation, so we recommend that you use some form of analytical approach when establishing job relativities. 

Job sizing is the cornerstone of pay structure design and provides a solid foundation for benchmarking pay.  You can also use it to help define what a job involves and what skills, knowledge and experience are needed to do it.  This can be used to help develop job descriptions, aid your recruitment and training processes and to develop a competency framework.

There are a range of ‘off the shelf’ systems that you can purchase and you can even design your own evaluation system.

Our job evaluation system

Using our experience of several different job evaluation systems we have devised Role-Check. This is our own package to measure jobs of any size, analysing them in their component parts to ensure fairness and consistency. It has been developed in line with the Equality and Human Rights Commission's guidance, so avoids the gender bias that can be present in older systems.

The system can be customised to meet specific organisational needs and we always check its results against a representative sample of jobs before embarking on a major organisational programme.  We will be happy to discuss the available options and advise on the approaches that would best suit your needs.

Full job evaluation is not always necessary and we often use the shorter process of job matching to establish role sizes.  This enables us to analyse roles against the job evaluation factors to establish the hierarchical levels that they most closely match.  

If it’s a straightforward market assessment that you are after and you prefer not to look in detail at a role, then we will use our expertise to categorise it so that it can be matched to available pay data.

The scores produced by our job evaluation system can be linked directly to our Salary-Check database of salary surveys, allowing us to obtain precise pay benchmarking data for your roles at the touch of a button. This approach enables you to achieve the appropriate balance between internal relativities and external market data for your organisation.
